Historic Badminton Theatre Destroyed in Massive Fire at Athens’ Goudi Park
by Athens Bureau · Greek City TimesThe historic Badminton Theatre in Athens’ Goudi Park was completely destroyed by a major fire on Sunday evening, with the building collapsing as firefighters battled the intense blaze.
The fire broke out shortly after 8:00 p.m. inside the disused theatre. As the venue was no longer operating, authorities believe there were no people inside at the time.
The flames quickly engulfed the building, causing the roof to collapse as thick black smoke spread across large parts of the Athens metropolitan area. Residents in several districts received emergency 112 alerts due to the heavy smoke, while witnesses reported hearing a number of explosions as the fire intensified.
Fire crews initially considered deploying aerial firefighting equipment to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby structures. However, the plan was later cancelled after authorities determined the fire had been contained within the Badminton Theatre and the immediate surrounding area.
According to the Hellenic Fire Service, the blaze has been confined to the theatre building, with no threat to the wider Metropolitan Park of Goudi or nearby outdoor areas.
A total of 38 firefighters responded to the incident, supported by 10 fire engines, two aerial ladder trucks, a breathing apparatus unit and six auxiliary vehicles. Volunteer firefighters, along with water tankers from the municipalities of Athens, Zografou and Papagou-Cholargou, also assisted in the operation.
Authorities monitored the scene using drones equipped with optical and thermal imaging cameras, providing real-time updates to the Fire Service’s operations centre.
Investigators from the Athens Arson Crimes Division remain at the site and have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
No injuries have been reported.
