Greek Police Recover Deleted Evidence in Mazonakis Case

by · Greek City Times

Greek police have recovered evidence that someone allegedly tried to delete as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the death of popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis, Hellenic Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou said.

“It appears that an attempt was made to delete some evidence, which police officers managed to recover,” Dimoglidou told Greek television station SKAI on Saturday morning.

She said she could not disclose the content of the recovered material but described it as “very important evidence” for the investigation.

Dimoglidou also stressed the importance of the police’s immediate response after authorities received the news of Mazonakis’ death. Police teams went to the hospital, his home and the private medical practice where an incident had occurred earlier.

“This case demonstrates how important it is for the Police to respond immediately,” she said, adding that “attempts were made to conceal evidence.”

Police identified contradictions early in investigation

Dimoglidou highlighted the role of officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, who examined the scene and identified specific findings before briefing the prosecutor responsible for the case.

She also said investigators identified contradictions during the early stages of the inquiry.

“These were very important elements that allowed us to move the investigation forward and realise that we were not being given information about what actually happened at the scene,” she said.

According to Dimoglidou, police identified contradictions between the initial statements they received and evidence gathered from the area around the medical practice.

Investigators also identified a significant discrepancy concerning the time Mazonakis arrived at and entered the medical practice.

“There was a major discrepancy between the time given verbally to the Hellenic Police and the actual time when this person arrived and entered the medical practice,” Dimoglidou said.

The contradictions, together with the evidence investigators collected and recovered, prompted police to broaden their inquiry into the events that preceded Giorgos Mazonakis’ death.
