Personal belongings believed to belong to an American tourist staying in the building have been discovered among the rubble following the powerful explosion in Plaka, Athens.

A bag belonging to the tourist was found as rescue crews continued searching the remains of the building on Lysikratous Street.

The three-storey building partially collapsed after the explosion shortly after 7:35am on Friday, leaving three people injured.

Firefighters and members of Greece’s Emergency Response Unit (EMAK) remain at the scene, using specially trained search dogs and thermal imaging cameras as they search for possible survivors.

Heavy machinery is also being used to carefully remove debris, with rescuers facing difficult and potentially dangerous conditions because parts of the structure remain unstable.

Authorities are continuing efforts to locate several people who may have been inside the building when the explosion occurred.

The ground floor was reportedly unoccupied, while the first floor operated as a short-term rental accommodation. A family of three from overseas is believed to have been staying there, with their scheduled checkout at 11am.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the family was inside the property at the time of the explosion, and attempts to contact them have reportedly been unsuccessful.

An elderly couple is also believed to have been staying in the building.

The search and rescue operation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish exactly who was inside the building when the explosion occurred.
