A witness in the Pantelis Pantelidis case has been handed a one-year suspended prison sentence for false testimony, following a court decision in Athens.
The witness had claimed that he found the late Greek singer Pantelis Pantelidis on the ground after the fatal crash and lifted him into the passenger seat of the vehicle.
The court did not recognise any mitigating circumstances when imposing the sentence.
According to the report, the witness came forward almost five years after the 2016 crash, when the case had already been closed.
A second person who had also faced allegations of false testimony in connection with the case was acquitted.
The court ruling comes nearly a decade after Pantelidis was killed in a road accident in Athens in February 2016. The circumstances surrounding the crash have remained the subject of intense public interest and legal disputes.
Mina Arnaouti, who was also involved in the case and was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, commented on the court’s decision. She thanked her lawyers and said the proceedings had helped bring the truth to light.
The latest ruling adds another development to a case that has continued to attract attention years after Pantelidis’ death.
