Tax transparency meetings in Athens from 12 to 15 October put Greece at the centre of OECD peer reviews as AADE hosted a global tax information forum.
AADE Governor George Pitsilis opened the 25th meeting of the OECD Global Forum’s Automatic Exchange of Information Peer Review Group.
He said public bodies must earn citizens’ trust. In an interconnected world, tax authorities cannot stop at national borders, he said.
Because of the Common Reporting Standard, countries exchanged data on more than 171 million financial accounts in 2024. Those accounts held nearly €13 trillion, Pitsilis said.
He also said rules must keep pace with financial innovation. Then he pointed to the amended CRS and the new Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework.
As a result, AADE is investing in digital tools, data use and compliance systems, he said. No country can face these challenges alone.
Tax transparency Athens agenda
Maria José Garde, head of the Global Forum Secretariat, thanked the Greek hosts for organising the Athens meeting.
She said the forum is in one of its busiest periods. Peer review work is bearing fruit, she said.
In particular, delegates are due to discuss 20 consolidated jurisdiction reports as part of an assessment of CRS effectiveness.
What delegates will weigh
Greek City Times earlier reported that the Greek tax authority seized 9,100 litres of fuel and four tankers in a separate enforcement case.
Background on the Common Reporting Standard is available on the OECD automatic exchange pages. AADE publishes authority news via aade.gr.
Still, tax transparency Athens remains the focus while peer reviewers weigh how jurisdictions apply the global standard.
Pitsilis closed by stressing that tax transparency Athens work succeeds only when countries share expertise and best practices.
