Novak Djokovic has revisited his controversial decision not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, explaining his position in a new Amazon documentary and recalling the consequences he faced during the pandemic.
Djokovic said he believed he was healthy, had natural immunity and did not consider himself a threat to others. He also argued that vaccination should remain a personal choice.
«“It’s my freedom to choose what goes into my body. That fundamental right was taken from a lot of people.”»
His decision had significant consequences for his career. Djokovic missed major tournaments, including the 2022 Australian Open, after refusing to comply with COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
The dispute also brought him into direct conflict with Australian officials, who defended the country’s vaccination and border policies.
Then-Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said there would be “no special rules for Novak Djokovic,” insisting that the tennis star would be sent home if he could not provide valid exemption documentation.
Immigration Minister Alex Hawke later cancelled Djokovic’s visa, arguing that his presence in Australia as a high-profile unvaccinated figure could “foster anti-vaccination sentiment” and contribute to civil unrest.
Health Minister Greg Hunt also defended the government’s position, saying officials disagreed with people expressing anti-vaccination sentiment.
Former Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews stressed that Australia’s border requirements applied to everyone, including Djokovic.
Djokovic also faced criticism in Serbia. Epidemiologist Predrag Kon criticised the tennis star in 2020, accusing him of “creating misconceptions” surrounding COVID-19 and public health measures.
The controversy made Djokovic one of the most prominent athletes to publicly resist COVID-19 vaccination requirements, with his decision costing him opportunities to compete in some of the sport’s biggest tournaments.
Despite the controversy and the professional consequences, Djokovic maintained his position.
The Serbian star has since gone on to cement his place among tennis history’s greatest players, with 24 Grand Slam titles and a record number of weeks spent at No. 1.
For Djokovic’s supporters, his handling of the controversy represents his willingness to accept significant professional consequences rather than compromise on a deeply held personal conviction.
