Several Turkish media outlets are highlighting the planned presence of Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides at the COP31 UN climate conference in Antalya in November. Coverage frames the trip as a notable development after a 10-year gap, while largely avoiding any linkage to the Cyprus problem or possible bilateral contacts with Turkish leaders.

Pro-government site Haber7 ran the headline “First visit after ten years: The Greek Cypriot leader is coming to Turkey,” focusing on the historical angle. It referenced the 2016 visit by then-President Nikos Anastasiades to Istanbul, creating an implicit comparison without assessing any potential shift in Turkish-Cypriot relations.

Similarly, the pro-government newspaper Yeni Akit used the title “For the first time after ten years: The Greek Cypriot leader is coming to Turkey,” again emphasizing the decade-long absence as the main point.

Opposition-leaning OdaTV, under the headline “Christodoulides is coming to Turkey,” limited itself to announcing his participation and noting the preceding diplomatic efforts that secured the invitation. It offered no evaluation of Turkey-Cyprus relations or the prospect of meetings with Turkish leadership.

Yeni Şafak, another pro-government paper, headlined “The Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulides is coming to Turkey: His program has been announced.” It stressed the upcoming arrival but did not detail any specific bilateral meetings.

Overall, Turkish reporting treats the visit primarily as a historical first rather than a signal of progress on the Cyprus issue.

Christodoulides has confirmed he will attend, stating that the Republic of Cyprus consistently participates in such summits and that the invitation followed diplomatic efforts with EU partners. Turkey, as co-host with Australia, initially faced EU pressure over selective invitations before extending one to the Cypriot president.
