Greece’s top military commander has visited Cyprus following high level talks in Israel, as regional tensions continue to shape Greece’s defense posture in the eastern Mediterranean.
Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Dimitrios Houpis, met with his Cypriot counterpart, Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou, and Cyprus Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas during a two day visit on Thursday and Friday.
According to Greece’s Defense Ministry, Houpis also visited Greek military personnel stationed in Cyprus and inspected Greek military assets deployed on and around the island.
The visit comes amid concerns over the possibility of Iranian strikes in the eastern Mediterranean linked to the ongoing war in the Persian Gulf.
Greek F-16s and frigate deployed to Cyprus
Four Greek F-16 fighter jets and the frigate Nikiforos Fokas are currently stationed in Cyprus as part of Greece’s military presence in the region.
Houpis met with personnel serving on the island and was briefed on operational developments and the readiness of Greek forces.
His visit to Cyprus followed a trip to Israel earlier in the week.
On Wednesday, Greece’s Defense Ministry confirmed that Houpis had held talks in Israel with Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, as well as senior officials from Israel’s Defense Ministry.
The meetings come as Greece and Israel continue to deepen their military and defense cooperation.
Greece, Israel and Cyprus strengthen coordination
Greece and Israel have significantly expanded military cooperation in recent years, including joint exercises and closer coordination as security challenges increase across the region.
The relationship has taken on additional importance as tensions between Israel and Turkey have deteriorated, while Greece and Cyprus continue to monitor developments affecting the security of the eastern Mediterranean.
Houpis’ back to back visits to Israel and Cyprus highlight Athens’ focus on maintaining close coordination with key regional partners and ensuring the readiness of Greek forces amid growing instability in the wider Middle East.
