Greek-Australian MPs reaffirm strong Australia–Greece ties during Athens visit

ATHENS – A delegation of Australian politicians, including several prominent Greek-Australian leaders, has reinforced the enduring relationship between Australia and Greece during an official visit to Athens.

The delegation participated in events hosted by the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (PADEE-WHIA), which this year marks 30 years of bringing together parliamentarians of Greek heritage from around the world to strengthen ties with Greece and the global Greek diaspora.

Among those attending were WHIA Vice President and Federal Member for Adelaide Steve Georganas MP, NSW Minister for Industrial Relations Sophie Cotsis MP, Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack MP, Western Australian Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas, and former Victorian MP John Pandazopoulos.

The delegation was welcomed to the Australian Embassy in Athens by Australian Ambassador to Greece Alison Duncan, where discussions focused on expanding cooperation between Australia and Greece and exploring initiatives to further strengthen the close relationship between the two countries.

During their visit, the Australian representatives joined fellow parliamentarians of Greek heritage from across the globe for a commemorative session at the Hellenic Parliament. They also met with members of the Greek Government, Greek parliamentarians and regional officials to discuss opportunities for closer political, economic and cultural cooperation.

For three decades, Australian parliamentarians have played an important role within PADEE-WHIA, reflecting the significant contribution of the Greek-Australian community to public life and its ongoing commitment to strengthening relations with Greece.

The visit highlighted the enduring friendship between Australia and Greece and the vital role parliamentary diplomacy continues to play in building stronger connections between Greece and its global diaspora.
