Athens authorities have announced extensive traffic restrictions and security measures across the city centre ahead of the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, 7 October.
The General Police Directorate of Attica said the measures will include a temporary ban on all public outdoor gatherings and motorised marches from 6am on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, until 6am on Thursday, 8 October.
The restrictions will apply to the area enclosed by Rizari, Ploutarchou, Kleomenous, Melinas Merkouri, Koniari, Anastasiou Tsocha, Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Kaisareias, Michalakopoulou, Alkmanos, Ionos Dragoumi, Vasilissis Alexandrou Avenue, Efphroniou and Rizari.
According to the police announcement, authorities imposed the ban because gatherings and motorised marches could create a serious threat to public safety, including the potential for serious offences against life, physical integrity and property.
Police also cited the risk of serious disruption to social and economic activity in the affected area and the wider Municipality of Athens.
Thousands of police and drones deployed
Authorities will introduce heightened security measures to ensure the safe and orderly completion of Rubio’s visit.
Thousands of police officers from several services will participate, including public-order units, Athens Police, security and traffic police.
Authorities will also deploy drones to monitor the area from the air.
Senior police officers said authorities will try to minimise disruption for residents and visitors travelling towards central Athens.
They said Metro stations should close only for short periods and only when necessary. Authorities also intend to keep Evangelismos Metro station open throughout the visit because of its proximity to the hospital.
The restrictions form part of a wider security operation surrounding the US Secretary of State’s visit to Athens.
