Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the Divine Liturgy in his hometown of Chania, Crete, on Saturday, August 15, marking the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, one of the most important celebrations in the Greek Orthodox calendar.

Mitsotakis attended the service at the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, joining worshippers on the major religious feast day dedicated to the Virgin Mary, known throughout Greece as Panagia.

The August 15 celebration, widely known as Dekapentavgoustos, brings together religious observances and longstanding Greek traditions. Churches and monasteries across Greece hold Divine Liturgies, processions and special services, while communities around the country mark the occasion with traditional festivals and gatherings.

The Prime Minister’s presence in Chania also carries a personal significance, as the city is his hometown and a place closely associated with his family.

The Feast of the Dormition commemorates the “falling asleep” of the Virgin Mary and, according to Orthodox Christian tradition, her assumption into heavenly glory.

August 15 is a public holiday in Greece and is traditionally one of the busiest days of the summer, with thousands of people travelling to major religious centres and island communities to celebrate the feast.

Major celebrations are held at sites including Tinos, home to the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, Panagia Soumela in northern Greece and Panagia Ekatontapyliani on Paros.

Across Crete and the rest of Greece, the day is being marked with church services, pilgrimages, processions and local panigyria, combining religious devotion with traditional music, food and community celebrations.

For millions of Greeks and members of the Greek Orthodox community worldwide, August 15 remains a deeply significant day of faith and devotion to Panagia.
