Greece Appoints Nearly 30,000 Substitute Teachers

Greece has appointed 29,948 substitute teachers and specialist education staff for the 2026-27 school year, the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports announced on Tuesday.

The appointments cover primary and secondary education, as well as special education and general education programmes.

Of the total, 23,162 appointments concern teachers in primary and secondary education, while 6,786 involve Special Educational Staff (EEP) and Special Auxiliary Staff (EΒP). A further 142 teachers will work at the Public Ωνάσεια Schools.

Primary education

In primary education, the ministry appointed:

  • 11,502 teachers in special education and training (EAE)
  • 4,121 teachers in general education

Secondary education

In secondary education, the appointments include:

  • 3,048 teachers in special education and training
  • 4,109 teachers in general education
  • 200 PE79.01 teachers for music specialisations at Music Schools
  • 142 teachers at the Public Ωνάσεια Schools

The ministry said 35 positions remained unfilled, including 34 special education positions requiring certified proficiency in Greek Braille or Greek Sign Language, because there were not enough qualified candidates.

The Sivitanidios Public School of Arts and Vocational Training will also receive 40 temporary substitute teachers in secondary education, following a decision by its board.

More than 6,700 specialist support staff

The ministry also appointed 6,786 Special Educational Staff and Special Auxiliary Staff.

Their placements include:

  • 1,647 in Special Education and Training Schools
  • 4,080 in specialised educational support, including parallel support
  • 381 in the Centres for Interdisciplinary Assessment, Counselling and Support (KEDASY)
  • 678 in School Networks for Educational Support (SDEY) operating through KEDASY

The ministry said 108 positions remained unfilled because there were not enough candidates.

It also appointed one substitute teacher to provide specialised educational support at an Ecclesiastical School.

Teachers to start on September 7

The newly appointed staff must report to their schools and begin their duties from Monday, September 7, through Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The Education Ministry has published further information about school placements, where required, and the process for taking up duties on its website for substitute teachers.
