Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Monday he believes New Democracy can secure a governing majority in next year’s parliamentary elections, speaking at an event for the conservative party’s 52nd anniversary.

He told party officials and supporters that ND has passed 40% in four previous elections, including under his leadership. “And we will do it again,” he said. “We will belie the expectations of those who believe we can’t achieve our stated target. We will do it again in 2027.”

Polls put ND well ahead of its nearest rival ahead of the spring vote, but the party is running at about 30%, short of the share needed to govern alone. No other party has shown any willingness to join it in a coalition.

Both ELAS, the new left-wing party founded by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, and Socialist PASOK trail ND by double digits. Both say they still hope to finish first. Mitsotakis is seeking a third consecutive term, which would be a record.

“We can constantly renew ourselves,” he said. “That is our great strength, and that will allow us once again to gain Greeks’ confidence. We will have the opportunity, ahead of the elections, to explain to the electorate what our plan is for Greece in 2030.”
