Ömer Çelik: Turkey will not accept ‘shows of force’ in the Aegean

AKP spokesperson Ömer Çelik has called on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to show “prudence,” while warning that Ankara will not accept “any show of force or provocation” in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Çelik said Turkey does not want “provocative approaches” in the region at a time of global instability and urged “everyone to display prudence and rationality.” He added that Ankara’s preference for diplomacy “must not be seen as a sign of weakness.”

“We are fully aware of our power, both at the negotiating table and in the field,” he said. “There is no message that can be sent to Turkey through shows of force or provocative moves. We will not recognise or accept any message delivered in that way.”

Otherwise, he warned, “new problems will emerge in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean.”

Çelik also reopened the Cyprus front, attacking the United States for extending the waiver of its arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus. He called the decision “not the appropriate move” and said it would further erode trust between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
