Egyptian national arrested over murder of prominent Athens lawyer Stavros Georgiou

A 28-year-old Egyptian national has been arrested in connection with the murder of prominent criminal lawyer Stavros Georgiou, who was found beaten to death inside his office in central Athens earlier this week.

Greek police allege the suspect fatally assaulted the 73-year-old lawyer with a blunt object following an argument inside the office on Monday night. He has now been formally charged over the killing.

According to investigators, Georgiou and the suspect had spent time together earlier that evening before the lawyer reportedly offered the man a lift in his car. Police believe the pair stopped at Georgiou’s office, where an altercation took place for reasons that remain under investigation.

Authorities say a combination of CCTV footage and forensic evidence led detectives to the suspect. Security camera recordings captured two men believed to be Georgiou and the suspect walking together near the lawyer’s office shortly before the killing.

Investigators were also alerted by the suspect’s broken arm, which police believe may have been sustained during the violent attack.

A post-mortem examination found that Georgiou suffered multiple blunt-force injuries to the head and chest, confirming investigators’ initial belief that he had been violently beaten to death.

The lawyer’s body was discovered after his 16-year-old twin daughters became concerned when they were unable to contact him for several hours. After repeated phone calls went unanswered, they went to his office and repeatedly rang the bell. A resident of the building heard the girls and alerted the caretaker, who opened the premises, where Georgiou was found dead.

Police continue to investigate the motive behind the killing, with authorities yet to determine what triggered the fatal confrontation.
