Kalymnos Builds Partnerships in France to Develop Diving Tourism

The Municipality of Kalymnos is seeking to strengthen its ties with the island’s diaspora and develop new partnerships in diving tourism through a series of contacts in France.

According to an announcement from the Municipality of Kalymnos, the initiative followed a visit by Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Culture and Diaspora Affairs Kalliopi Koutouzi to Port-de-Bouc, France, last June.

Following the visit, members of the local diving association travelled to Kalymnos with their families and stayed on the island for around two weeks.

The visitors explored Kalymnos’ seas and beaches while experiencing its local cuisine and hospitality. They also met with Koutouzi to discuss potential cooperation in diving and ways to develop the island’s diving tourism offering.

The deputy mayor also held two days of meetings with people of Kalymnian origin living in France.

Among them was Theo Mavrostomos, who has Kalymnian roots and holds a Guinness World Record for a dive in a hyperbaric chamber to an equivalent depth of 701 metres.

During the meeting, Mavrostomos expressed his willingness to support efforts to develop diving tourism in Kalymnos, drawing on his experience and expertise in the field.

The initiatives form part of Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos’ wider plans to promote Kalymnos, strengthen its tourism outreach and build lasting ties with Kalymnians living abroad.
