Greece and Brazil reaffirmed their strong ties and agreed to deepen cooperation in tourism during a meeting between Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and Brazil’s new Ambassador to Greece, Laudemar Gonçalves de Aguiar Neto.
The meeting also included Andreas Fiorentinos, Secretary-General of the Greek National Tourism Organisation.
The two sides placed particular emphasis on institutional cooperation in tourism, which gained further momentum with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on tourism in 2023.
Kefalogianni and the ambassador agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation by building on the comparative advantages of both destinations and developing joint initiatives with tangible results.
Greece and Brazil cooperate through UN Tourism
Kefalogianni highlighted the close cooperation between Greece and Brazil within UN Tourism, noting that the two countries share a common vision for sustainable tourism development.
She also highlighted Brazil’s role as chair of the organisation’s Executive Council and the potential for closer cooperation at the international level.
The Greek tourism minister stressed the importance of the Brazilian market for Greece, pointing to the positive growth in tourism flows between the two countries, efforts to improve air connectivity and opportunities to promote Greece more widely across Latin America.
Brazil seeks Greek tourism expertise
Ambassador Gonçalves de Aguiar Neto highlighted the strong foundation of bilateral cooperation and proposed intensifying joint initiatives.
He also pointed to opportunities created by the UN Tourism Regional Office in Rio de Janeiro and expressed Brazil’s interest in exchanging expertise with Greece in areas including hospitality, improving the visitor experience and diversifying tourism products.
Kefalogianni also referred to the upcoming European Strategy for Sustainable Tourism and initiatives to promote the “Brand Europe” in strategically important markets, stressing that Brazil represents an important market for both Greece and Europe.
The minister and ambassador finally agreed to promote new forms of cooperation between public and private organisations in the two countries, focusing on knowledge exchange and initiatives that can further strengthen tourism ties between Greece and Brazil.
