Greek Police Make New Arrests in EuroLeague Final Four Attacks

by · Greek City Times

Greek police have arrested two more suspects in connection with fan-related attacks that took place after the EuroLeague Final Four championship game, further advancing the investigation into the incidents.

According to the Hellenic Police, the two men face allegations of participating in an attempted robbery targeting supporters of a rival team.

The arrests followed judicial warrants issued after investigators analysed evidence collected during the case, including digital forensic material.

Police said officers from the Sub-Directorate for Combating Organised Sports Violence identified the two 24-year-old suspects as participants in one of the attacks.

Authorities allege that a previously arrested 23-year-old drove the vehicle used during the incident, while one of the newly arrested suspects threatened victims with a knife and the second demanded they hand over scarves displaying the rival team’s colours.

During searches of the suspects’ homes, officers seized an air gun, a grinder containing a small quantity of cannabis, three mobile phones, team stickers and keyrings, and clothing allegedly worn during the attack.

Police said one of the suspects was also arrested for violating Greece’s narcotics legislation and was already subject to judicial restrictions in connection with another case.

The investigation follows two separate fan-related incidents in Athens after the EuroLeague Final Four, including an attack on police officers on Alexandras Avenue and an attempted robbery of rival supporters.

Authorities said investigations into the broader incidents of sports-related violence are continuing.

The suspects have appeared before the competent public prosecutor. As with all criminal proceedings, the allegations remain before the courts and no verdict has been reached.
