Greece is moving closer to officially recognizing April 29 as the Day of Greeks Abroad, following formal support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an initiative backed by Greek diaspora organizations around the world.
The proposal was launched by the Vienna based cultural association Hephaestus Wien and first submitted in 2021 to the Standing Committee on Greeks Abroad of the Hellenic Parliament. Since then, it has gained support from diaspora organizations, community leaders and prominent figures across the global Greek community.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs backs initiative
According to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally acknowledged the proposal in a letter dated August 18, 2026, addressed to Hephaestus Wien President George Gstrein.
The Ministry said establishing a dedicated day for Greeks abroad is consistent with the government’s goal of strengthening ties between Greece and the millions of Greeks and people of Greek heritage living around the world.
It also confirmed that the necessary administrative procedures are underway, with a bill expected to be submitted to Parliament for approval in the coming months.
A coordinated program of events is also expected to be organized in Greece and throughout the diaspora to mark the occasion once the initiative is officially established.
A day dedicated to Greeks around the world
Supporters say April 29 would be more than a symbolic date. They envision it as a permanent annual occasion recognizing the contribution of Greeks abroad while strengthening cultural, educational and historical ties with Greece.
The initiative aims to highlight the role of the diaspora in preserving the Greek language, culture, traditions and values across generations.
It would also provide an opportunity for younger generations of Greeks abroad to maintain stronger connections with their heritage and with Greece.
Hephaestus Wien welcomed the latest development and thanked the organizations and individuals who have supported the initiative.
The association said its goal is for April 29 to become a permanent point of connection between Greece and Greeks around the world, emphasizing that the diaspora remains an important and active part of the future of Hellenism.
If approved by Parliament, the establishment of the Day of Greeks Abroad would give the global Greek community an officially recognized annual day dedicated to celebrating its identity, heritage and contribution to Greece and the wider world.
