Trump Defends Iran War Despite Republican Election Losses

by · Greek City Times

US President Donald Trump said the war with Iran was worth the cost, despite acknowledging that it contributed to Republican losses in the midterm elections, in which the party lost control of Congress.

“The Iran issue was something we had to do and continue to do,” Trump told reporters.

The war with Iran drove up petrol prices, which became one of the main factors behind significant Democratic gains in the elections.

Trump defended the military campaign, arguing that its costs were justified to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

He also said he had no problem with a social media post by Vice President JD Vance earlier on Wednesday, in which Vance addressed the Republicans’ heavy election losses and wrote that “the reason we lost is the war”.

“I can tell you that, as far as this war is concerned, I would do nothing differently,” Trump said.

The US president also repeated his belief that Republicans would have won if he had personally stood as a candidate in the elections.

“But you couldn’t transfer that love to the candidates. There was so much love at the campaign rallies, it was incredible, but we couldn’t transfer that love to the candidates,” he said.

Trump Says Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth Is Doing a ‘Very Good Job’

US President Donald Trump said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth was doing a “very good job”, dismissing speculation that he planned to replace him.

“No, I think he is doing a very good job,” Trump told a reporter when asked whether he was considering removing Hegseth.

Earlier, several US media outlets, including CBS, reported that Trump was considering replacing Hegseth following the Republicans’ heavy losses in the midterm elections. Trump and Vice President JD Vance attributed the defeat to the political and economic consequences of the war against Iran.
