Pierrakakis Sets Deadline for Lagarde Successor Nominations
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesGovernments across the 21 eurozone countries have until Friday, 6 November 2026, to nominate candidates to succeed Christine Lagarde as president of the European Central Bank (ECB).
Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis has asked member states to submit their nominations by that date, a spokesperson for the body, which brings together the finance ministers of the eurozone’s 21 countries, confirmed.
Eurozone finance ministers are expected to examine the nominations at the Eurogroup meeting on 9 November.
European leaders will meet in Brussels on 26 and 27 November, when they are expected to make progress towards selecting new members of the ECB’s leadership, including Lagarde’s successor. An informal meeting of EU leaders is also expected to take place approximately two weeks earlier.

Last Thursday, Lagarde announced that she would step down as ECB president on 7 February 2027, approximately nine months before the scheduled end of her term.
According to Bloomberg, potential candidates mentioned so far include Pablo Hernández de Cos, the former governor of the Bank of Spain and current head of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), and Klaas Knot, the former governor of the Dutch central bank.
The selection of Lagarde’s successor forms part of a broader reshuffle of the ECB’s Executive Board, with three of its six positions due to change hands.
Isabel Schnabel, who oversees the ECB’s markets portfolio, is expected to leave in early January, approximately one year before completing her eight-year term. The Eurogroup has extended the deadline for nominations to replace her until 27 November.
Meanwhile, ECB chief economist Philip Lane’s term expires in May, and the process to find his successor has already begun.
