Summer Holiday Exodus Fills Greek Ports as Islanders Head to the Islands
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesGreece’s major ports are bustling with travelers as the peak summer holiday season intensifies, with thousands of people departing for the islands.
On Sunday, July 13 alone, ferry operators scheduled 21 departures from Piraeus, 15 from Rafina, and 8 from Lavrio, reflecting the high demand for island destinations during this period.
Maritime Affairs Minister Vassilis Kikilias visited the Port of Piraeus early in the morning to monitor operations during one of the busiest travel days of the year. He met with passengers, professional drivers, coast guard personnel, and ferry crews, wishing them safe travels and a pleasant summer.
Emphasizing that passenger safety is the government’s top priority, Kikilias urged travelers to follow instructions from port and coast guard authorities, especially as ferries are operating at or near full capacity.
“For us, safety comes first,” the minister stated, calling on passengers across the country to cooperate with officials to ensure smooth departures.
Ferry traffic is expected to remain very high until mid-August, when the summer exodus traditionally reaches its peak.
