Athens Bomb Threats Target French Consulate, Egyptian Embassy

A series of anonymous bomb threats targeting diplomatic and business buildings in central Athens triggered a major security operation on Friday, with Greek police searching four locations, including the French Consulate and the Egyptian Embassy.

Greek authorities said unknown callers contacted the French Consulate and the Egyptian Embassy at around 11 a.m., claiming explosive devices had been planted inside the buildings. The callers did not specify when the alleged devices would detonate.

Around 15 minutes later, at 11:15 a.m., similar threats targeted the buildings of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBEA) and the Athens Chamber of Tradesmen (BEA) on Akadimias Street.

Police immediately deployed specialist units, including the Hellenic Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department (TEEM), to conduct searches at the locations. Officers secured the areas while bomb disposal experts carried out inspections.

Authorities later confirmed that all four threats were hoaxes and that no explosive devices had been discovered.

Previous bomb threat at French Embassy

The latest incident follows another bomb threat reported several days earlier at the French Embassy in Athens.

On July 27, an anonymous caller contacted the embassy at around 11:40 a.m., claiming that an explosive device had been placed inside the building.

Bomb disposal experts rushed to the scene, while police temporarily stopped traffic on Akadimias Street to allow security checks.

Authorities found no explosives and determined that the warning was also a hoax.

Greek police continue to investigate the repeated false alarms targeting diplomatic and institutional buildings in central Athens.
