Five years after Caroline Crouch was murdered in Glyka Nera, her case has returned to the global spotlight in a new Amazon Prime Video true crime documentary examining the digital evidence that helped unravel her husband’s elaborate cover story.

The Fitbit Killer, which premiered on September 15, revisits the 2021 murder of the 20 year old British Greek woman and the investigation that initially centred on a fabricated home invasion.

The two part documentary, produced by British production company Story Films, returns to both Glyka Nera, where Caroline was killed, and Alonissos, where she grew up.

The production team spent 14 days filming in Greece, interviewing people who knew Caroline, members of her family, lawyers involved in the case and individuals familiar with the police investigation.

Among those appearing in the documentary are Caroline’s father, David Crouch, police analyst George Kalliakmanis and family friend Nikos Anagnostou.

The 37 day deception

On May 11, 2021, Caroline was found dead inside the family home in Glyka Nera.

Her husband, Babis Anagnostopoulos, initially told police that armed robbers had broken into the house, tied him up and attacked Caroline.

The family’s dog was also found dead.

For 37 days, investigators pursued the robbery theory while Anagnostopoulos publicly presented himself as a grieving husband caring for their infant daughter.

But the story began to unravel as investigators examined the digital evidence.

The smartwatch at the centre of the investigation

One of the most significant pieces of evidence was Caroline’s smartwatch.

The device recorded changes in her heart rate during the final moments of her life. According to the documentary, the data showed her heart rate at levels consistent with sleep at around 4am before a sharp change was recorded minutes later.

Investigators also examined data from Anagnostopoulos’ mobile phone and fitness applications, comparing his recorded movements with the account he had given police.

Security camera footage and electronic records from inside the house were also scrutinised.

Together, the digital traces helped investigators reconstruct what happened that night and identify contradictions in the original robbery narrative.

Caroline’s diary also examined

The documentary also explores Caroline’s personal diary, which provides insight into her relationship with Anagnostopoulos and tensions that existed before her death.

Her writings are considered alongside messages and other evidence documenting the final period of her life.

The confession

The robbery story finally collapsed on June 17, 2021, 37 days after Caroline’s murder.

Anagnostopoulos was taken into custody while he was on Alonissos for Caroline’s memorial service.

He subsequently admitted that the robbery had been fabricated and confessed to killing his wife.

In May 2022, a Greek court unanimously convicted him of Caroline’s murder, as well as killing the family dog, making a false report and giving a false statement.

He received a life sentence for Caroline’s murder, plus an additional 11 years and six months for the other offences.

The conviction was upheld on appeal in September 2023, with the court again refusing to grant mitigating circumstances.

Five years later

The Amazon Prime documentary now takes the case back to the places at the heart of the tragedy, from the Glyka Nera home to Caroline’s childhood island of Alonissos.

For an international audience, The Fitbit Killer places particular emphasis on the technology that helped expose a story investigators initially believed for more than a month.

Caroline’s smartwatch, mobile phone data, fitness records, security footage and other digital evidence became crucial pieces in reconstructing the final hours of her life and dismantling the robbery story.

The case that shocked Greece is now being retold through the digital trail that helped reveal the truth.
