Priest Gives Hotel Money To Couple Having Sex in Chapel
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesAn Orthodox priest says he chose compassion over punishment after discovering a young couple engaged in intimate activity inside a chapel attached to a church in central Athens on Saturday night.
According to EkklisiaOnline, the 58-year-old parish priest found a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman inside the chapel, which remains open 24 hours a day for worshippers and has an unlocked entrance.
The report says the priest had finished locking the main church when he heard unusual noises coming from the nearby chapel, located in a public square in the Greek capital.
Speaking to the publication, the priest said he was shocked when he entered the chapel.
“When I reached the chapel entrance, I was surprised to find a young man and a young woman in an intimate situation. I instinctively cried out in surprise, which startled them. They immediately apologised before I had even spoken.”
The priest said he asked the couple to get dressed and accompany him to his office inside the church.
“There, I gave them a glass of water and we talked,” he said. “I explained that it is natural to have feelings and desires at their age and that love is a beautiful thing, but we must respect a sacred place.”
Rather than contacting police, the priest said he gave the young man €100 and encouraged the couple to go to a hotel instead.
“I told them, ‘Go to a hotel with my blessing, but remember what we discussed.'”
The publication did not identify the church or chapel involved, and no police action was reported.
