Katerini Town Planning Corruption Probe Leads to Arrests

by · Greek City Times

The first six of the 11 people arrested in an alleged corruption network at the Katerini Urban Planning Office have been released under restrictive conditions following their statements to investigators.

The case centres on an extensive network of alleged illegal financial transactions involving the issuance of building permits.

According to findings by the Internal Affairs Service of Security Forces, investigators have documented 151 alleged criminal offences. They estimate that the illegal payments and material benefits requested or received total €138,000.

Authorities imposed different restrictive conditions on the six suspects. The daughter of one key defendant must remain in Greece and pay €10,000 in bail. The daughter of a second defendant must report regularly to the authorities and also pay €10,000 in bail.

Two engineers must remain in the country and report to the authorities. Investigators imposed the same conditions on two other engineers, who must also each provide €20,000 in bail.

Further Statements Expected

The investigation continues tomorrow, when four Urban Planning Office employees are expected to give statements, including the department’s director and a section head. A seventh private-sector engineer will also appear before the authorities.

Police arrested 11 people in total, while the case file names a further 64 individuals.

The engineers involved have denied the allegations against them. Two of them are first-degree relatives of Urban Planning Office officials who also face charges.
