A new chapter in tourism cooperation between Thessaloniki and Bucharest is expected to open in spring, with the mayors of the two cities preparing to sign a cooperation memorandum.

Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Angeloudis and Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu met in the Romanian capital on Sunday during Angeloudis’ visit for the “Destination Thessaloniki” promotional event.

The two mayors agreed to sign the memorandum in Thessaloniki, with Ciucu expected to visit the Greek city in March or April.

Beyond tourism, the mayors discussed cooperation between universities in the two cities and ways to improve connectivity between Thessaloniki and Bucharest.

“It was a two-day period of meaningful cooperation and Thessaloniki’s presence in Bucharest,” Angeloudis said after the meeting.

He also thanked the Greek Embassy in Bucharest and the Greek National Tourism Organisation’s office in the Romanian capital for their support and cooperation in promoting Thessaloniki.

Greek Ambassador to Bucharest Lili Grammatiká and Thessaloniki Deputy Mayor for Culture, Tourism Development and Inter-Municipal Cooperation Vasilis Gakis accompanied Angeloudis at the meeting.

Afterwards, Angeloudis signed Bucharest’s visitors’ book, thanking Ciucu for hosting the Greek delegation and for starting what he described as close and productive cooperation aimed at developing both cities.

Angeloudis also presented Ciucu with a statuette of Alexander the Great.
