Rob Jetten Is Becoming a Father
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesTHE HAGUE, October 2026 — Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his fiancé, Nicolás Keenan, are expecting their first child in spring 2027 through a surrogate mother and an egg donor, his party said on Monday.
“Someone very special is on the way. See you in 2027, little one,” the couple wrote on Instagram. They posted the message in Dutch, Spanish and English, Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported.
The pair also thanked their egg donor and their “surrogate mum Lisa”, as well as both women’s families.
At 39, Rob Jetten is the youngest and first openly gay prime minister of the Netherlands. NOS said he appears to be the first serving Dutch prime minister to expect a child.
“We are incredibly grateful that, thanks to two wonderful women, we now have the opportunity to make our dream come true,” Jetten said. He added that the surrogate mother and the baby are doing well.
Rob Jetten also urged everyone to respect the privacy of the two women.
Surrogate mother and egg donor
Both women are Dutch and know the couple well, Rob Jetten’s party D66 said. The surrogate mother and her partner already have children and are friends of Jetten and Keenan.
No one is receiving payment, the party said. In addition, the IVF treatment took place entirely in the Netherlands and complies with Dutch law, it said.
Lisa said surrogacy feels like “a very special way to help make the dream of our dear friends come true”. She also said she grew up in a warm, loving home and now has a family of her own.
Dutch law bans people from publicly offering themselves as surrogates or promoting surrogacy for profit, NOS reported. However, the law does allow payment of expenses, it said.
Each year, surrogate mothers in the Netherlands give birth to a few dozen children, the broadcaster said. The news also comes as the Dutch House of Representatives considers new surrogacy laws, NOS current affairs program Nieuwsuur reported.
Paternity leave and politics
Rob Jetten will take “several days” of leave around the birth and then return to work, D66 said. Keenan, an Argentine field hockey player, has agreed arrangements with his club and Argentina’s national team, the party said.
According to NOS, D66 treats the pregnancy as a private matter for Jetten as party leader, not as prime minister. That distinction matters because his minority government needs votes from small Christian parties that oppose surrogacy, the broadcaster said.
Rob Jetten’s coalition of D66, the VVD and the CDA took office on 23 February, the Dutch government said. He and Keenan announced their engagement in November 2024, Euronews reported.
Surrogacy remains a sensitive issue in Greece. In April 2025, Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis said Greece would bar single men and male couples from surrogacy, Greek City Times reported at the time. Later, in September 2026, Prince Philippos and Princess Nina announced their first child, born via a surrogate in the US.
