New Democracy maintains commanding lead in latest GPO poll
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesGreece’s ruling New Democracy (ND) remains comfortably ahead in the latest GPO poll for iefimerida.gr, despite recording a slight decline in support, while ELAS has consolidated second place and PASOK continues to lose ground.
The survey also found that support for Maria Karystianou’s proposed political movement has fallen significantly since June, while speculation over a possible new party led by former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras appears to be gathering momentum.
ND leads comfortably
In voting intention, New Democracy received 25.7%, down marginally from 26% in the previous poll.
ELAS remained in second place with 14.5%, while PASOK slipped to 9.5%, continuing its downward trend after polling 10.2% a month earlier.
Maria Karystianou’s proposed political movement, “Elpida” (Hope), also recorded a notable decline, dropping to 6.1% from 9.2%.
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and Greek Solution each polled 8%, while Plefsi Eleftherias and Foni Logikis recorded modest gains.
Vote estimate
After allocating undecided voters, the estimated election result places New Democracy on 29.3%, maintaining a commanding lead over its rivals.
The projected results are:
- New Democracy (ND): 29.3%
- ELAS: 16.6%
- PASOK: 10.8%
- Greek Solution: 9.1%
- KKE: 9.1%
- Maria Karystianou – Elpida: 7.0%
- Other parties: 5.3%
- Plefsi Eleftherias: 4.6%
- Foni Logikis: 3.2%
- Niki: 1.7%
- MeRA25: 1.7%
- SYRIZA: 1.6%
Economy remains top concern
The poll found that the economy, particularly the rising cost of living, remains the issue most likely to influence how Greeks vote at the next election.
Other key concerns include tackling corruption, strengthening the rule of law and improving everyday quality of life.
Respondents indicated they place greater importance on parties’ policy proposals than on the personal image of political leaders.
PASOK struggles to capitalise
Despite criticism surrounding the government, PASOK has failed to convert voter dissatisfaction into increased support.
Only 18.6% of respondents viewed PASOK’s performance as the main opposition positively, while almost eight in ten assessed it negatively.
The findings suggest many voters remain unconvinced that the party offers a credible alternative government.
Which government was better?
When asked whether life was better under the governments of New Democracy or SYRIZA, 41.5% of respondents said there was no significant difference.
Meanwhile:
- 28.9% said they were better off under New Democracy.
- 26.7% preferred the SYRIZA government.
The results point to a widespread feeling of stagnation rather than strong approval or rejection of either administration.
Trust on key issues
New Democracy continues to lead on issues relating to the economy and foreign policy, polling 32.3% and 39.2% respectively.
On social policy, ELAS held a slight advantage, although this has yet to translate into broader electoral gains.
When it comes to combating corruption, however, no party enjoys overwhelming public confidence.
- ELAS: 24.2%
- New Democracy: 21.7%
- PASOK: 13.3%
A further 38.7% of respondents said they trusted none of the major parties to tackle corruption effectively.
Samaras speculation grows
The survey also found increasing interest in a possible new political party led by former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
The proportion of respondents saying they would be “very” or “quite likely” to support such a party rose from 9.2% in June to 12.3% in July, indicating growing curiosity about a potential new conservative political force.
