Police Question Doctor Linked to Giorgos Mazonakis Death

Greek police have launched an investigation into the death of popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis, with the Athens Security Subdivision taking responsibility for the case and preparing a criminal file.

The investigation will examine the circumstances leading up to the singer’s death and determine whether any criminal offences occurred. The Organised Crime Division, known as the Greek ‘FBI”, may also assist the investigation.

The first person police called to give evidence was the doctor who owns the private clinic in Kolonaki, where Mazonakis suffered the cardiac arrest.

Police are expected to question everyone who had contact with the singer, both before he arrived at the clinic and during his treatment there and later at Elpis Hospital.

Investigators will also include records of the medical procedures performed on Mazonakis in the case file, along with the findings of the forensic examination following the autopsy.

Earlier, Security Police officers went to the clinic to interview those involved and inspect the area where Mazonakis spent the critical final minutes of his life.

However, officers did not find the doctor at the clinic at the time.

Shortly after 8pm, following a police summons, the doctor went to the police station to give evidence.

Greek authorities stressed that police routinely investigate sudden deaths to establish the circumstances and causes, meaning the investigation itself does not necessarily indicate that authorities suspect criminal wrongdoing.
