Eight Migrants Detained After Illegal Entry From Turkey

Greek police have located eight migrants aged between 17 and 27 in Lykovrysi, who allegedly entered Greece illegally from Turkey before smugglers transported them to Athens.

DIAS police officers spotted a vehicle in the area during the morning of August 29 and considered it suspicious because several people were inside.

Police then searched the surrounding area and located the eight foreign nationals shortly afterwards. Officers found that they did not have the documents required for legal residence in Greece.

The authorities took the eight migrants to the Attica Aliens Directorate, where the Migration Management Department conducted the preliminary investigation.

According to the investigation, the group entered Greece on August 27 through a point along the Greek-Turkish border and subsequently met smugglers who transported them further into the country.

From a safe house in Thessaloniki to Athens

The migrants initially travelled to Thessaloniki, where they stayed in a so-called “safe house”.

Smugglers then transported them to Athens, with the United Kingdom and Sweden reportedly serving as their intended final destinations.

According to the Hellenic Police, each migrant paid between €5,000 and €17,000 for the journey.

Authorities filed charges against the eight for violating Greece’s immigration legislation.

Police have also begun the process of registering and documenting the migrants in order to determine the appropriate procedure for their return to their countries of origin.

The eight were subsequently brought before the competent prosecutor.
