Turkish Media Claims Ro and Strongyli Do Not Belong to Greece

Turkish media has renewed focus on the disputed status of Greek islands and islets in the southeastern Aegean, highlighting the proximity of Kastellorizo to the Turkish coast and making claims about the sovereignty of nearby Ro and Strongyli.

Turkish television network A Haber aired a report on the region following the presence of a Greek warship on Kastellorizo.

During the broadcast, the network repeatedly highlighted the island’s geographical proximity to the Turkish mainland. A presenter said Kastellorizo is just 1,950 metres from the Turkish coast, describing the distance as one that could be covered by swimming.

The report also featured images and maps of the surrounding area, including the islets of Ro and Strongyli.

A Haber referred to Ro by its Turkish name, Karaada, and Strongyli as Fener Adası, while claiming that the two islets “do not belong to Greece.”

The broadcast also referred to the presence of a missile launcher on Kastellorizo and questioned Greece’s intentions, with the discussion framed around the island’s military status.

The claims reflect Turkey’s longstanding position regarding the status and militarisation of several Greek islands and islets in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Greece maintains its sovereignty over the islands and rejects Turkish challenges to its territorial rights.

Hürriyet links Aegean tensions to Greek Israeli defence ties

Turkish newspaper Hürriyet has also reported on tensions between Athens and Ankara, publishing an article titled “Tension in the Aegean on the Ankara Athens line.”

The newspaper linked the issue to Greece’s military presence on Aegean islands and the strengthening of defence relations between Greece and Israel.

Hürriyet separately reported on a joint naval exercise involving Greek and Israeli forces in the Eastern Mediterranean, presenting it as evidence of growing defence cooperation between Athens and Tel Aviv.

The Turkish coverage comes amid renewed attention to security developments in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, where Greece and Turkey continue to hold sharply differing positions over territorial, maritime and military issues.

The latest reports highlight how developments involving Kastellorizo and nearby Greek islets remain highly sensitive in Greek Turkish relations.
