Over 15,000 Diaspora Greeks Register to Vote in Next Elections

More than 15,000 Greeks living abroad have registered to vote in the next parliamentary elections, five weeks after Greece launched its overseas voter registration platform, according to the Interior Ministry.

Officials expect the number to continue rising, with registrations remaining open until 24 hours after the elections are officially called.

“We can’t know for certain, but based on registrations on the postal-vote platform, we estimate the final number could reach 60,000,” said Athanasios Balermpas, the ministry’s secretary-general for domestic affairs.

The overseas voter platform, apodimoi.ypes.gov.gr, opened on August 2. Around 60% of those who have registered are men and 40% are women, with most living in Europe. Two-thirds of registrants are aged between 31 and 50.

Around 6,000 registrants have indicated that they would prefer to vote in person at polling stations abroad rather than use postal voting.

Greeks registering through the platform do not need Taxisnet codes. Instead, they need to present their passport to a camera as part of the identification process.

The number of Greeks registering to vote from abroad could rise significantly compared with the 2024 European Parliament elections, when 48,894 overseas voters registered for postal ballots. Germany, Britain and the United States recorded the highest numbers of registrations.
