Greece will keep its Patriot battery in Saudi Arabia for another month, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said after a meeting of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA).

“We will grant a one-month extension. I believe the issue with Saudi Arabia will be resolved,” Dendias told reporters as he left the Maximos Mansion.

KYSEA decided the battery at Yanbu stays in place for that extra month. The Greek force in Saudi Arabia (ELDYSA) is there to help defend energy infrastructure that Yemen’s Houthis have repeatedly attacked.

Dendias also said contracts for the “modern fighter” programme are moving ahead.

Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis briefed the council on the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and Ukraine, and on Greece’s agenda as it takes the presidency of the UN Security Council, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said. The session also covered deployments of Greek forces under international commitments.
