Mazonakis Death Investigation: New Evidence Puts “Drunkenness,” Defibrillator and Adrenaline Under Microscope

New evidence is being examined by authorities investigating the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis, with investigators focusing on what happened inside the Kolonaki clinic during the final hours of his life.

Among the latest issues under scrutiny are alleged references to “drunkenness”, a defibrillator and adrenaline, communications involving doctor Ioanna Gaka and hypnotherapist Nasos Komianos, and new findings from the singer’s autopsy.

Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest during a plasmapheresis procedure at the clinic on Karneadou Street in Kolonaki. Doctors Ioanna Gaka and Elias Theodoropoulos, who are currently in pretrial detention, deny involvement in wrongdoing and their defence has presented its own account of what happened.

“Drunkenness”, defibrillator and adrenaline

According to information reported by Greek media, a 28 year old clinic secretary told investigators that she heard references inside the clinic to “drunkenness”, a “defibrillator” and “adrenaline” during the critical period.

She allegedly sent a message to a relative suggesting that Mazonakis had been made drunk. The message was later deleted, according to reports.

Investigators are examining whether Mazonakis had been given sedative medication before or during the procedure.

Toxicological testing is expected to establish whether substances including benzodiazepines or other sedatives were present in his system and, if so, at what concentrations.

The results could become important in reconstructing what happened before the singer suffered cardiac arrest.

New questions surrounding the plasmapheresis procedure

Authorities are also examining the medical procedure itself and whether complications may have contributed to Mazonakis’ collapse.

Among the possibilities being investigated are thrombosis, an air embolism and complications involving the administration of fluids.

Initial autopsy information reportedly did not identify thrombosis, although investigators are awaiting the full results of histological and toxicological examinations before drawing conclusions.

Another question concerns Mazonakis’ condition before he arrived at the clinic.

Descriptions of his state reportedly differ.

Information attributed to the clinic has described him as being in a state of intense hyperarousal, while a pharmacist, taxi driver and parking lot employee are reportedly said to have described him as behaving normally shortly before his arrival.

Investigators are examining whether those differing accounts affected decisions made at the clinic.

Autopsy reveals myocardial ischemia

The autopsy has also raised new questions.

According to information reported by Proto Thema, relatively extensive ischemia was identified in the interventricular myocardium, the muscular tissue between the heart’s two ventricles.

Histological testing is expected to establish whether the finding was connected to an acute myocardial infarction and, if so, when the cardiac event occurred.

That timing could be significant because investigators are attempting to establish a precise sequence of events before, during and after the plasmapheresis procedure.

Reports have also noted that Mazonakis was not previously known to have a history of heart disease or coronary artery disease.

The hypnotherapist and the alleged cooperation agreement

Investigators are examining the professional relationship between Ioanna Gaka and hypnotherapist Nasos Komianos.

Komianos reportedly told investigators that he had met Mazonakis only once, two days before his death.

The meeting allegedly took place at a restaurant in Psychiko and reportedly involved Mazonakis’ manager and a 55 year old businessman.

According to information under investigation, the discussion involved hypnosis and a so called “detox” procedure.

Mazonakis allegedly had reservations about undergoing plasmapheresis and had even considered having the procedure abroad.

Investigators are also examining an alleged three page cooperation agreement between Komianos and the doctors.

According to reports, the agreement provided for mutual referrals of clients, with Komianos allegedly paying €40 for each patient referred to him by the doctors. The arrangement reportedly also allowed him to use a medical practice on Patriarchou Ioakeim Street for sessions.

Authorities are investigating whether the professional relationship had any connection to the treatment Mazonakis received.

Another piece of evidence under examination is a photograph allegedly sent by Ioanna Gaka to Komianos while Mazonakis was undergoing plasmapheresis.

The photograph reportedly shows the singer seated in the plasmapheresis chair with his eyes closed and intravenous lines in both arms.

According to reports, the image had been deleted from Gaka’s phone but was later recovered by investigators.

Authorities are now examining whether further communications took place between the doctor, Komianos or other individuals during the period surrounding Mazonakis’ collapse.

Defence disputes the timeline

The defence of Gaka and Theodoropoulos disputes aspects of the investigation, particularly the timeline of events.

The defence has focused on the testimony of the 28 year old secretary, who has already given evidence twice and was recently called again by the 32nd regular investigator following a request from the doctors’ lawyers.

According to the defence version, Mazonakis was already at the clinic at around 3:30pm when another patient arrived for a scheduled appointment with Theodoropoulos.

The defence claims Theodoropoulos was in his office before the patient’s arrival and later remained with that patient until approximately 4:10pm.

A document submitted by the doctor reportedly shows that he prescribed medical tests at 4:06pm.

Theodoropoulos’ defence is using this information to argue that he was not involved in the plasmapheresis procedure and was not in the room when Mazonakis collapsed.

Conflicting accounts over Mazonakis’ arrival

Investigators are also examining contradictions between employee statements concerning the timing of Mazonakis’ arrival.

The 28 year old secretary initially reportedly placed his arrival at around 3:30pm.

Other evidence examined during the investigation reportedly places his arrival shortly before 2pm.

Authorities are expected to question other clinic employees as they attempt to establish the sequence of events minute by minute.

Histology and toxicology results now crucial

The investigation is now awaiting the results of histological and toxicological examinations.

Those findings could help establish the cause and timing of the cardiac event, whether any substances were present in Mazonakis’ system and how his medical condition developed during the procedure.

At the same time, authorities are examining communications recovered from the phones of the two doctors following the lifting of telephone secrecy.

Gaka and Theodoropoulos remain in Korydallos prison while the investigation continues.

Their defence maintains that they were not responsible for Mazonakis’ death and is pursuing further legal action.

According to reports, Theodoropoulos is also considering asking investigators to replace his pretrial detention with house arrest and electronic monitoring.

The investigation remains ongoing and the final medical and forensic findings have yet to be completed.
