President Tasoulas Marks 205th Anniversary of Tripolitsa Liberation

Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas attended ceremonies in Tripoli marking the 205th anniversary of the Capture and Liberation of Tripolitsa during the Greek War of Independence.

The Municipality of Tripoli organised the commemorations, which honoured the historic events of 1821 and their significance for the course of the Greek Revolution.

Following a religious service at the Metropolitan Church of Saint Basil in Tripoli, led by Metropolitan Epifanios of Mantineia and Kynouria, President Tasoulas laid wreaths at the Monument to the Hierarchs and Notables and at the statue of Greek revolutionary leader Theodoros Kolokotronis in Areos Square.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Tasoulas highlighted Kolokotronis’ central role in the liberation of Tripolitsa 205 years ago.

“The instigator of the Capture and Liberation of Tripolitsa, 205 years ago, Theodoros Kolokotronis, had said that God had put His signature on Greece’s freedom. And God does not take back His signature,” President Tasoulas said.

He added that Kolokotronis, as commander-in-chief of the revolutionary forces, “put his seal” on the liberation and helped achieve a decisive victory during the first year of the Greek Revolution.

According to the President, the victory influenced, consolidated and advanced the Greek Revolution, strengthening the morale and spirit of the revolutionaries who were fighting for independence.

“The Liberation and Capture of Tripolitsa proved decisive for the subsequent course of the struggle. It was perhaps the beginning, which is half of everything,” Mr Tasoulas said.

He said Greeks today commemorate the anniversary by remembering the events of 1821 while also protecting the achievements secured through the liberation of Tripolitsa and the wider revolutionary struggle.

“That struggle secured our freedom and sovereignty,” he said. “And just as they won that freedom and sovereignty then, today we defend them victoriously against every threat and every challenge.”

“Happy anniversary from Tripoli!” the President concluded.

A parade followed the commemorations, with the participation of school students, associations, guides, scouts, the Armed Forces and the Security Forces.
