Mother drowns while trying to save daughter

Madikeri: A fight over trivial issue between a woman and her daughter resulted in both of them reportedly jumping into a lake and ending their lives.

The tragedy took place at Kempurashi Motte in Tannimani village near Bhagamandala on Aug. 31.

The deceased have been identified as Prema (36) and her daughter Priyanka (14), residents of Tannimani village.

On Aug. 31 evening, Prema and Priyanka had allegedly quarrelled over a trivial issue. Following the quarrel, Priyanka, in a fit anger, reportedly told her mother Prema that she was going to jump into the lake and ran from the house.

Prema, who saw her daughter running towards the lake, ran behind her only to see Priyanka jumping into the lake.

In a bid to rescue her daughter, Prema too jumped into the lake only to drown in the 15-ft deep lake.

Villagers, who saw the mother-daughter jumping into the lake rushed to the spot and tried to rescue them but in vain.

Fire and Emergency Services personnel and Bhagamandala Police, who reached the spot, conducted a search and finally fished out the bodies in the early hours of yesterday and shifted the bodies to the District Hospital, where post-mortem was conducted and the bodies were handed over to the family members.

A case has been registered at Bhagamandala Police Station in this regard.
