257 Government educational institutions in Mysuru lack e-Khata

• Failure to provide proper documents has proven a hurdle to obtain e-Khata
• Maharaja’s High School and Junior College, Maharani’s Junior College are among 257 such educational institutions

Mysuru: In a startling disclosure, it has come to notice that over 250 Government educational institutions in the district are without e-Khata, owing to their failure in providing relevant documents to the Local Bodies, leaving them with several lakhs of rupees arrears pending in the form of property tax.

Interestingly, Maharaja’s High School and Junior College on JLB Road in city, which was established during princely rule 190 years ago in the year 1836, also has not been issued e-Khata, with Rs. 46.72 lakh (Rs. 46,72,116) property tax arrears owed to Mysuru City Corporation (MCC). Likewise, as many as 257 Government schools among sum total of 2,059 Government-owned institutions including the city and district, are without e-Khata.

The officers of School Education and Literacy Department are learnt to have requested the Local Bodies to issue e-Khata, before the influential persons set their eyes on prominent educational institutions of Maharaja’s era, including Maharani’s Junior College on Narayan Shastri Road, that are located in the heart of the city, making them pricey assets.

Deputy Director of School Education and Literacy Department Udaykumar told Star of Mysore, a letter correspondence is being made through Block Education Officers (BEOs) to convince Local Bodies to issue e-Khata under Karnataka Government Educational Institution’s Lands (Protection and Regularisation) Act, 2026.

MLC K. Vivekananda has come to the rescue of such institutions by writing a letter to the MCC Commissioner. He has requested the Commissioner to issue suitable directions to authorities concerned, after examining the matter and hold a separate drive to issue e-Khata so that these institutions can be saved from falling into shambles.

MLC Vivekananda said, apart from the MCC Commissioner, he has also written letters to respective Local Bodies, considering the importance to safeguard the institutions founded by the Maharajas of Mysore, who have made enormous contributions in the realm of education. The MCC Commissioner has assured to convene a meeting at the earliest, before arriving on a relevant decision, he added.
