Deaths have been reported after a small passenger jet crashed on Thursday in North Carolina, local officials said.

The aircraft, a Cessna C550, crashed while landing around 10:20 a.m. at Statesville Regional Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said in an emailed statement. The F.A.A. and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Bill Hamby, chief deputy of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, told CNN that there were fatalities, but he did not say how many. It was not immediately clear how many people were on board the plane. The Cessna C550 can carry up to eight passengers as well as two pilots.

Several NASCAR teams and Fortune 500 companies use the facilities at Statesville Regional Airport, which handles noncommercial traffic, including private, recreational and emergency flights.

John Ferguson, the airport manager, said at a news conference that the airport was closed and that the cause of the crash was not known.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
