by · ChronicleLive

Take a look at 32 of the North East parks that have been named among the best in the UK, as part of the 2026 Green Flag Awards. Several parks in Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, and South Tyneside have ben included, with over 2,000 recognised across the country.

The annual assessment process, led by the Keep Britain Tidy group, has been welcomed by local councils, as green spaces in their areas continue to be given the award. Set within a mix of rural and built-up areas, all of the parks involved are well-worthy of their inclusion.

Councillor Peter Lovatt, of Newcastle City Council, said: "We are delighted to have maintained these four Green Flags for 2026. I’d like to thank all those who have played a part, no matter how small, in ensuring these parks are among the best in the world."

For Northumberland County Council, Councillor John Riddle also said: “We know how much local residents appreciate having these lovely parks which are places they can visit for free, enjoy nature and reap the physical and mental health benefits of being outdoors.

“These 14 awards reflect not only the incredible work carried out by our staff and volunteers, but also our clear commitment to improving and protecting our parks."

Councillor Hannah Johnson, of North Tyneside Council, said this: "We're incredibly proud that eight of our parks, green spaces and cemeteries have achieved Green Flag Award status, with Whitley Bay Cemetery joining the list for the first time."

For South Tyneside Council, Director of Community Operations Gary Kirsop added: "Retaining Green Flag status for all six parks is a fantastic achievement and reflects the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in caring for these valued community spaces."
