New Met Office warning for snow and ice in North East amid 'difficult travelling conditions'
by Sonia Sharma · ChronicleLiveDrivers are being warned of difficult conditions on the roads as a new weather warning for snow and ice was issued.
The Met Office yellow warning runs from midnight on Sunday, January 5, to midday on Monday, January 6. And it covers County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland.
People are being warned to expect icy stretches that could lead to travel disruption. The weather experts said: "Snow will become more sporadic during Monday morning, though some further accumulations of a few centimetres are likely over the Pennines and perhaps the North York Moors. Icy stretches are likely to develop quite widely, making for some difficult travelling conditions.
"Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary."
The Met Office further urges: "Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.
"If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated."
An amber snow warning is in place from the Met Office throughout Sunday warning of heavy snowfall in areas of the North East. A yellow weather warning for snow and ice was put in place from midday on Saturday, January 4 and remain in place until midnight on Sunday, January 5, covering the majority of the region with the exception of the coast, as well as affecting most of England and Wales.
