Pictures show tractors slowing down traffic as Devon farmers protested against a government plan.

The 'go slow' protest took place yesterday (Wednesday, November 27) on the day of the Autumn Budget announcement, taking a stand against a proposed inheritance tax law.

Following on from a 'Day of Unity' on Monday, farmers again protested around the UK to oppose changes to the inheritance tax, purposefully slowing down traffic on major routes.

The protests across the region were in support of farmers in London, who protested outside parliament as chancellor Rachel Reeves gave her speech.

The Treasury announced changes which it said could save farmers and business owners money when passing on property. This came following backlash over original plans announced last year, bringing previously exempt farms into inheritance tax rules.

Now farmers who are married, or have deceased spouses, will be allowed to transfer their inheritance tax allowance (which is £1 million) to one another, if one of them dies having not used the allowance, according to the National Farmers' Union (NFU).

The president of the NFU, Tom Bradshaw, said: "It’s good to see the government accepts its original proposals were flawed.

"But this change goes nowhere near far enough to remove the devastating impact of the policy on farming communities."

Days before the Autumn Budget announcement, farmers took over a junction on the M5 to protest as part of a 'Day of Unity' on Monday (November 24).

The protests continued yesterday and photos show a number of tractors on the road.
