Mid Devon towns prepare for Remembrance Day events and tributes
by Lewis Clarke · DevonLiveThe Royal British Legion will once again be observing Remembrance Sunday and a two minutes silence on Armistice Day.
Commemorations will be held on Sunday, November 10 and on Monday, 11 November.
This is a mark of respect and acknowledgement for the sacrifices made by others in order that we may enjoy the benefits of freedom in a democratic society. Mid Devon District Council is pleased to join with representatives from the Royal British Legion in Crediton, Cullompton and Tiverton and to encourage people in the community to show their respect in observing the two-minute silence.
The following arrangements have been made in the three major towns:
Crediton
The Vice Chair of the Council, Councillor Gordon Czapiewski, together with the Mayor of Crediton, representatives from Crediton Hamlets Parish Council and representatives of the Royal British Legion will join together to observe the two-minute silence at 11.00am at the War Memorial on Union Road. Councillor Czapiewski will make the appropriate announcement before the start of the silence.
Cullompton
On Remembrance Sunday, a service will take place at St Andrew’s Church at 10am, before a procession heads from Church Street to the War Memorial at 10.40am. The Act of Remembrance is led by the vicar then a silence followed by the Rouse and wreath laying ceremony.
On Monday, November 11, Councillor Jane Lock, one of the deputy leaders of Mid Devon District Council, will join with representatives from Cullompton Town Council and the Royal British Legion at the War Memorial in the Bull Ring. Maroons will be set off at the commencement and end of the silence.
Tiverton
In Tiverton on Sunday, November 10, the parade will meet in Fore Street at 10.15am before heading to St Peter’s Church for a service shortly before 11am. The parade will then leave the church, head back along St Peter Street arriving at the Tiverton Memorial Building at around noon for wreath laying, the Last Post and God Save the King. Cafelicious in Market Precinct will be open to veterans from 9.30am to meet up for pre-parade refreshments.
On November 11, the chair of Mid Devon District Council, Councillor Frank Letch MBE, together with the Mayor of Tiverton, and representatives from the Royal British Legion will observe the two-minute silence in Phoenix Lane. Councillor Letch will make the announcement before the start of the silence. As in Cullompton, a maroon will be set off to mark the commencement and end of the silence.
