Driver arrested after crashed van abandoned in Devon hedge

A van crashed off a road in Devon and into hedgerow before being abandoned yesterday evening, Wednesday, October 23. A van was found at about 10pm last night along Deerpark Lane in Coffinswell near Newton Abbot after it crashed.

Drivers were warned to avoid the area and find alternative routes where possible by the Devon Alert X account, run by Devon County Council's highways team. The single-vehicle crash closed the road between Haccombe cross to Deerpark Lane.

Devon Alert reported: "St Marychurch Road is closed between Haccombe Cross to Deep Park Lane (Coffinswell area) due to an incident. Please find an alternative route if possible."

A man was found by police officers nearby and arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drunk or drugs. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital to be checked over, police have said.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police told DevonLive: "Police were called at around 10pm on Wednesday 23 October following reports of a single vehicle collision at Deerpark Lane in Coffinswell.

"Officers arrived and found a van in the hedge row.

"The driver was located nearby and arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of drunk or drugs.

"He was found to have sustained minor injuries so was taken to hospital to be checked over."
