Hi, friends. I'm Crystal, and I write the That Got Dark newsletter, BuzzFeed's weekly roundup of all things creepy, macabre, and horrible AF. And if you looooove this kind of content, you should subscribe!!!!!

Here's what the newsletter is covering this week:

Warning: Graphic content ahead, including stories of murder.

1. Last week, an Australian man, Simon Peter Carman, was charged with murder after the body of a 17-year-old girl was found inside a suitcase near railway tracks in Pattaya, Thailand. According to police, CCTV footage allegedly showed Tunchanok "Cake" Donhomla entering Carman's condominium before he was later seen leaving alone while wheeling a large suitcase. Authorities arrested him at Bangkok's international airport as he was allegedly preparing to flee the country.

Carman denied the charges, claiming he acted in self-defense after an argument. And, as if the case wasn't disturbing enough, he later recorded a message to Cake's family saying, "I feel bad for what happened to your daughter. It was out of my control," before adding, "Please tell other girls...just to be careful."

According to Thai police, Carman also gave investigators conflicting accounts of what happened inside the condominium. At one point, he reportedly claimed Donhomla had "disappeared" while he was asleep. Investigators, however, said he had scratch marks across his body consistent with a struggle. When questioned about the injuries, Carman allegedly insisted they had been caused by a spider. The investigation remains ongoing as he continues to deny the charges.

2. Summer Wells was just 5 years old when she disappeared from her home in Rogersville, Tennessee, on June 15, 2021. Her mother told investigators the little girl had gone downstairs to play before vanishing without a trace. Despite an exhaustive search of the rugged terrain by over 1,100 personnel and thousands of tips — including an ongoing search for a mysterious red Toyota Tacoma — no physical trace of her has ever been found.

The search for Summer quickly became one of the largest missing child investigations in Tennessee history. Hundreds of volunteers joined law enforcement officers in combing through steep hillsides, dense forests, abandoned buildings, and nearby waterways. Search helicopters, drones, K-9 units, and specialized rescue teams were all brought in, but despite weeks of searching, investigators never found any evidence explaining what happened to the little girl.

Over the years, investigators have continued to receive thousands of tips, many fueled by widespread online speculation surrounding the case. Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to separate rumors from verified information, emphasizing that the investigation remains active and that they still hope someone with critical information will come forward.

In 2025, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, in coordination with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, released an age-progressed image showing what Summer would look like now. Investigators continue to follow active leads in hopes of finally solving the case.

3. Benjamin Keough was the grandson of Elvis Presley and the son of Lisa Marie Presley. Although Keough largely avoided public attention, those who knew him often remarked on his striking resemblance to Elvis Presley. Lisa Marie once joked that seeing her son sometimes felt "overwhelming" because he looked so much like his famous grandfather.

Despite growing up in one of music's most recognizable families, Keough kept a low public profile. Friends and family later described him as gentle and deeply sensitive. Lisa Marie later revealed that he had also struggled with depression.

On July 12, 2020, Keough died by suicide at his home in Calabasas, California. He was 27 years old. His death devastated the Presley family, with Lisa Marie later writing, "The depth of the pain is suffocating and bottomless... I will never be the same." She continued speaking openly about grief and the loss of a child until her own death just a few years later in 2023.

4. Finally, Robert Alton Harris was a multiple murderer who kidnapped and murdered 16-year-olds John Mayeski and Michael Baker in California in 1978 after abducting them at gunpoint while they sat eating lunch in their car.

He and his brother forced the teenagers to drive to a remote canyon, where Harris shot them to death before stealing their vehicle. In one especially chilling detail, Harris later admitted to eating the boys' unfinished lunch before fleeing.

The brothers were arrested later that day after police spotted them driving the victims' stolen car. The case would later become one of California's most notorious death penalty prosecutions.

After spending more than a decade on death row, Harris became the first person executed in California after the state reinstated the death penalty. He was executed in San Quentin's gas chamber on April 21, 1992. Reporters and demonstrators gathered outside San Quentin as witnesses described Harris smiling and acknowledging people in the viewing room shortly before the gas chamber was activated.
