The Internet Is Divided Over NYC's Huge New Parking Sticker

Welcome to another post about Zohran Mamdani's New York.

This time, let's talk about parking tickets.

For the first time in 14 years, New York City has brought back the "sticker of shame" for drivers who don't move their cars for street sweepers. NYT journalist Emma G. Fitzsimmons shared a picture of what it looks like on X:

The Sanitation Department even kindly included removal instructions directly on the decal: "Remove this sticker with warm water and a scraper." Oh, and "Do not litter." (lol)

People are divided on this one!

FWIW, this policy was introduced and passed by the New York City Council, not by Mamdani's mayoral office!

Now, let's look at the reactions.

You have a large contingent of New Yorkers really into the public shaming aspect of it all:

"Beastmode, we need to bring back shame for drivers who steal from the public commons."

"I'm all for bringing back public shaming in 2026."

Bikers are already calling for a dedicated bike-lane edition: "Let’s make one of these for bike lane, bus lane, crosswalk, and sidewalk parkers."

Others pointed out the behavioral psychology behind it: "Consistent, minor penalties change behavior better than rare, severe ones."

You have people in other cities asking their local governments to adopt the policy:

"Boss shit from the NYC department of sanitation. Hello @PhillyMayor."

"Giant stickers of eternal shame and mockery by your pals. We need this in the twin cities."

And, of course, the haters:

"As someone who owned a car in NYC, it already sucks when you have the panicked realization that you forgot alternate side parking, and you get a ticket. There is no need for a sticker of shame."

"Just tow the car like a normal city."

"Why not raise the price of a ticket, or escalate the price for repeat offenders?"

Ultimately, I think we can all agree that choosing neon green was certainly an inspired choice!

Because seriously: "Will brat summer never end?"
