Carney plans to spotlight Europe pivot with visit to tiny French archipelago – POLITICO

PARIS — Mark Carney will wrap up a week spent shifting his country’s foreign policy toward Europe on Sunday with the first-ever visit by a Canadian prime minister to the obscure French territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, where he’ll meet President Emmanuel Macron.

The trip to the picturesque archipelago — a few kilometers off the south coast of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador and home to fewer than 6,000 people — comes after Carney travels to Strasbourg for Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the European Union speech on Wednesday. The Canadian leader then journeys on to Liverpool to meet with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Carney and Macron will discuss cooperation on AI, energy, defense and critical minerals, according to a statement from the Canadian prime minister’s office. It is also Macron’s first trip there since taking office in 2017.
