Charge upgraded to second-degree murder after weekend homicide in Surrey
by Emma Crawford · CityNewsA 29-year-old man’s charge in connection with a fatal shooting in Surrey over the weekend has been upgraded from manslaughter to second-degree murder, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said Friday.
The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says officers were called to a home on Laurel Drive near 139th Street around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, after receiving reports of shots fired.
A man, also 29 years old, was found inside suffering from gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect was taken into custody and was initially charged with manslaughter with a weapon.
“The upgrading of the charge in this investigation is a result of continued efforts by the investigative team and our partners,” IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong said.
The suspect remains in custody after appearing in court Friday morning.
On Monday, IHIT said the incident was not believed to be related to gangs or extortion.
