Beyond her association with Andrew, she has established herself in her own right. She mostly keeps her private affairs out of the spotlight, which explains the lack of public information regarding her age and early life.

Regarding Jai's educational background, she is reportedly a two-time graduate of Florida A&M University (FAMU) and has built a career in communications and public relations. She earned a biology degree and a Master of Public Health. R. Jai Howard reportedly first met Andrew Gillum in Tennessee when both of them were members of the student government association at Florida A & M. At that time, she was focused on building her academic portfolio while he was planning out his political career.

R. Jai Gillum and Andrew Gillum's exact dating timeline is not known; however, they knew each other for years before deciding to get hitched. Jai came into the spotlight during her husband's highly publicised 2018 campaign for governor.

Reports claimed that Jai is a dedicated supporter of her husband, and that she publicly stood by his side through thick and thin. Andrew Gillum always had his family's backing during his high-profile personal and legal challenges. Even when his political career was derailed in 2020 following a hotel scandal, she navigated the fallout with him. For the unversed, at that time, he was found highly intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room alongwith a man suffering from a suspected substance overdose.
