by Saakshi Gupta · BollywoodShaadisNancy Guthrie has been missing for nearly 100 days, with no breakthrough in the high-profile case. But it appears investigators are finally moving toward solving the case. For those unaware, the 84-year-old disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1, 2026. Since then, her family and authorities have been looking for her. The case immediately caught media attention as Nancy is the mother of NBC's Today co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie. Now, a new update from Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, has given the Guthrie family and thousands of people following the case new hope.
Pima County Sheriff says investigators are getting closer
Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos, who has been leading the investigation, recently gave one of the most direct updates. When reporters asked him whether they were getting any closer to solving Nancy's disappearance, Chris had a brief but significant message. He mentioned, "We are". The short statement immediately sparked fresh hope, and the social media users have interpreted it as a sign that law enforcement might have found an important lead in the case. According to the officials, the search for the 84-year-old is active and involves both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities explained from the beginning that they believe Nancy was taken from her home against her will. Sheriff, Chris Nanos earlier stated that the evidence at the crime scene pointed towards a forced abduction over a voluntary disappearance. The Sheriff's latest statement comes after several weeks of intense public and media pressure on the investigators. Meanwhile, the supporters of the Guthrie family have continued to share messages of hope and support.
DNA evidence may hold the key in Nancy Guthrie case
One of the biggest developments in the investigation of Nancy Guthrie's case is a hair sample found at her home. According to the investigators, it might have been left behind when she was taken away. In turn, the sample has been moved from a private forensic lab in Florida to the FBI for advanced DNA testing. So, the authorities believe that it might play a crucial role in solving the case. Meanwhile, the law enforcement officials have already collected DNA samples from family members, employees, and other people connected to Nancy's home to remove known individuals from suspicion.
If the hair sample belongs to someone not connected to the family, the investigators believe it could help identify a suspect through genetic genealogy. Forensic expert, David Mittelman, co-founder of Othram, explained that DNA testing itself may not take that long. However, building a complete and usable profile from the degraded evidence can be difficult. According to him, the challenge is not generating DNA data but producing high-quality DNA data strong enough for genealogical matching.

Surveillance footage raises new questions
Apart from DNA evidence, surveillance footage has become another major focus. Authorities have previously released the doorbell camera footage showing a masked person near Nancy's front porch around the estimated time of her disappearance. The individual was dressed in dark clothing and reportedly carried a holstered gun. According to the investigators, the new footage has also surfaced showing a similar person near the property three weeks before Nancy went missing.
It also raised concerns that the suspect had been watching the home before the incident. Meanwhile, the officials say the suspect appeared to be wearing gloves, a hoodie, sweatpants, a backpack, and a balaclava. Therefore, the footage has become central to the investigation as detectives try to hide the identity of the person and connect them to physical evidence.
